Day 15 - Perth to Gravel Pit near Nilgen Nature Reserve - Tuesday 23rd May 2017

First stop today after heading off was Karrinyup shopping center for some much needed supplies. Then we headed north stopping first at a Parks and Wildlife office in Wanneroo to inquire about an annual pass. In the end we chose not to buy one reasoning that we would need to enter quite a number of parks to make it worthwhile - perhaps more than we were likely to visit. Some 100 km up the road we found our free camp for the night at a large gravel pit on the eastern side of the highway. Before we took advantage of this though we visited nearby Nilgen Nature Reserve and had a very pleasant short walk through the Reserve admiring the wildflowers. Then back to the gravel pit where we observed a rather odd gent, some distance away thankfully, who clearly didn't possess all his mental faculties talking and shouting at himself from time to time while doing who knows what around his old Ford sedan. He was in all likelihood a mentally disturbed homeless person but his behaviour was quite unsettling. Anyway some little while later we were joined by a few other vehicles including a large bus converted into a motor-home so security in numbers helped ease the disquiet. In the distance we could hear the sound of explosions which we put down to weapons firing at the nearby Department of Defense training ground near Nilgen. Other than that we had a peaceful night and went to bed quiet early.
