After a much delayed start we finally got away at around 12.30 pm heading for our planned destination of the town of Dimboola in Victoria's Wimmera District. Other than a few short coffee and egg sandwich breaks it was a fairly uninterrupted drive. We'd selected a free camp for our first night by the Wimmera River, this courtesy of WikiCamps, an app that we had grown to love after our first trip away in our motorhome. The actual campsite was a sandy area surrounded by gumtrees virtually on the riverbank beside a sporting ground the other side of which was the paid campground – I reckon we got the better deal. The following day (Wednesday 10th) we awoke surrounded by mist on a cold morning (0.4 c) – it was quite beautiful to see the mist on the river from the warmth of our bed. After breakfasting and ablutions we set off for Levi Park in Adelaide, a camp ground we’d selected as being the easiest from which to access Adelaide proper. En route we first stopped at the pink lake outside Dimboola which is a picturesque salt pan with pink salt crystals. Our next break came at Tintinara where I managed to get bitten by a bull ant while drinking coffee outside. Then on to Coonalpyn where we stopped to admire the beautifully painted wheat silos. After a minor traffic jam in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs we finally reached Levi Park in the suburb of Vale Park where we settled into our camp ground. On Thursday we caught a bus in to the city where we first visited the South Australian Art Gallery for an hour or so before then heading down the Torrens River to the Adelaide Festival Centre. Then it was off to Rundle Mall to do a little shopping for a few items including a pair of jeans for myself and various other small items. Our next move was to catch a free circle bus which took us around Adelaide including North Adelaide and allowed us to appreciate the lovely sandstone houses that so typify Adelaide. We alighted at the Botanic Gardens corner where West Terrace meets North Terrace. After wandering around the Gardens for an hour or so we finally headed home by bus to settle in for the night.
Our blog created to record our experiences as we travel around the western side of Australia during the winter of 2017. Still trying to see as much of the planet as possible. We hope you enjoy our observations and holiday snaps.
